"Gosh, I think this little girlie is ADORABLE! I love photographing this age (3 years old) because their interactions are so real, their expressions so genuine! The fact that a 3 year old normally has a short attention span motivates me to work fassssssssssst!"

It was fun interviewing Sylvia and getting to know her better.

What talent would you most like to have?
I would love to be a great, great, great piano player. I've taken piano lessons many times, but because I don't practice enough, I always have to go back to square one. I'm not too old to keep on trying am I?

What one food could you eat every day?
Avocados. They are so good for you and taste so delish with just a bit of salt. And of course, guacamole with chips is so, so, so yummy!
Did you go to college? What was your major?
I went to UCLA! Goooooooo Bruins! I double majored in Communication Studies and Political Science. I thought I'd go to law school, but started teaching elementary school instead and loved being a teacher!

What are you most proud of?
My boys. They are the sun, the moon, and the stars!

If you could have one superpower what would it be?
To be able to do 10 loads of laundry, vacuum, wash dishes, make beds all in under 10 minutes. LOL! Yes, that would be a great superpower to have!

I asked her a couple questions about this shot.

Why do you love this image?

First because that's my baby <3 and I love her little smile, and her stranglehold on the stuffed dog that goes everywhere with us. I love it also because of the hayfield setting, the textured processing, and most of all the gorgeous golden backlighting. Oh, how I love shooting in the sun! If I could shoot EVERY session backlit at sunset, I'd be overjoyed.

What were your settings with this image?
I shot this on my old camera - the Nikon D90 with the 35mm 1.8 lens. ISO 200, f/1.8 and ss 1/1600.

And to get to know her better, here's a little interview: ) I hope you enjoy getting to know Cari. She is a doll.

What do you love about Photography?
I love the creative outlet Photography offers me; the process of imagining a concept, sculpting my vision into reality, then capturing the moment through the lens and editing it to perfection. I also love the challenge of it; there are so many elements of a great image that I am constantly striving to learn more and be better. It's the most fulfilling career I've ever had, not just because it is challenging and creative, but also because it allows me to meet wonderful families and people, and preserve their precious and fleeting moments for them to cherish forever.

What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I focus mostly on seniors and families. I adore working with seniors - they have so much energy and personality and style; it's contagious! And I love the dynamics and emotions and playfulness of family sessions. I love that a family often shows up expecting their portrait session to be like another chore on their to-do list, only to find that they actually have a blast together doing it! And it's so rewarding when they see their images and tell me with a big smile that I really captured who they are together! I have very few images of my own family together from my childhood, but I treasure them. I think EVERY family deserves a photographic reminder of the love they share....
I shoot a lot of kids and babies too, and since I love kids and babies anyway, those shoots are most enjoyable! Kids have such a range of expressions and moods, even in a 20 minute period, and I love preserving that for their parents to cherish later. I love capturing all the little details of childhood - hands, feet, eyelashes - because they change so quickly when they're young, and without a photo it's difficult to recall exactly how they looked at a particular moment, right down to the fingernails.

What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
Besides photography, I love to read. I read a novel a day. It's an addiction. Like chocolate. Or Angry Birds

Who or what inspires you?
I'm very inspired by other photographers. There is such incredible talent out there, and also generosity and hard work. I'm inspired by gorgeous light - that hour before sunset on a summer day especially. I find nature very inspiring - moonlight on a river or fog on an open field at dawn always inspire me to pick up my camera...

Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
Right now I am reallly loving One Republic. Can't get enough of them. But I'm a big fan of the cheesy classics too - like New Kids on the Block, lol.

What is your favorite movie of all time?
That's tough. There's no way I can pick just one. Off the top of my head, I'd say some of my faves are the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Shakespeare in Love, and Shawshank Redemption.

What would your ideal day be like?
Sunny!!! Living in Seattle, I've got a mad craving for sunshine - we don't get enough of it!!! The perfect day would be warm and bright, spent exploring the beach with my husband and kids, and my camera of course!

If you weren't a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
Before I was a photographer, I was a teacher. If I couldn't take pictures, I'd like to work with kids again in some capacity. Or maybe I'd be a florist. Or a travel writer.

It's just so much easier to have all the details worked out and then you can sit back and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Why do you love this image?
It's my daughter that has PCS (Photographer's Child Syndrome) and never lets me photograph her. She was so cooperative this day and I got a ton of great stuff of her.

What were your settings with this image?
Aperture 2.8, Shutter Speed 1/640, ISO 250

What do you love about Photography?
It would be easier to answer what I DON'T love about photography (editing,hee hee). I love making people look their best by using great light. I love getting boxes of prints from my lab and seeing my work in print - it's like Christmas every time the UPS guy comes.

What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
Children's. I love kids! I have six of my own and LOVE to make kids smile.

What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
I love to read. I knit, sew, crochet and do about anything crafty. I love to roller skate and still play the Limbo every time I take my kids skating.

Who or what inspires you?
My kids originally inspired my love for photography. I get inspired everyday by my photographer friends, we push each other to be our best.

Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
I am very fickle when it comes to music, my tastes are always changing. Right now on my MP3 the songs range from Lady Gaga, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Rascal Flatts to the Spice Girls (don't judge!).

What is your favorite movie of all time?
I don't really have a favorite but I love romantic comedies.

What would your ideal day be like?
Warm, sunny, the beach, a nanny...

If you weren't a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
I always thought that I would like to be a Radiologist but I think I would be bored with that now.

1) Why do you love this image?
This was baby #5 for this mother. She knew it would be her last. When I see this image, I see a mother truly savoring the time she has with her newborn. Her last baby. As a seasoned mother, she knows this time will be brief. In the meantime, she'll cherish it. She knows this time won't last but a moment but it is the beginning of a lifetime.

2) What were your settings with this image?
ISO 200 F 7.1 SS 1/60 Studio Lighting

3) What do you love about Photography?
The emotion, the details, the truth, the way it helps you remember. Life goes by so quickly - especially with children! They grow and change so much from helpless newborn to strong willed toddler. I love how you can watch a baby grow through a series of images.

4) What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
I tend to work with the 1 and under crowd. I love capturing the details of a tiny newborn, but my absolute favorite age to photograph is around 6-7 months. The personality really starts to emerge, you get these gorgeous smiles with big eyes and baby is able to maintain a variety of poses without running away. Well, sometimes they crawl away...

5) What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
Playing with my son, photography & travel

6) Who or what inspires you?
My 3 year old son Wesley. Becoming a parent is hands down the best thing that has ever happened to me. I adore this little man so much and I would love to find a way to stop time! My attempts to document his every experience has played a major role in my journey as a photographer. I love watching him grow, but I want to remember every minute. Unfortunately, he has been growing really fast, time has been flying by and my memory isn't as good as it used to be. Thankfully, my camera doesn't forget!

7) Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
Oh my goodness - can I just say I love it all? The Beatles, Bare Naked Ladies, Sarah McLachlan, Billy Joel, Norah Jones - all play on my Ipod regularly. I love oldies, classics, techno, pop and can be perfectly content listening to mainstream top 40 on the radio... and I love to sing along.

8) What is your favorite movie of all time?
The Princess Bride or maybe Forrest Gump - or just about any Disney movie - I could (and have) watched them over and over.

9) What would your ideal day be like?
Waking up in Walt Disney World - in the castle suite (a girl can dream, right?), starting the day with some room service Mickey waffles and then having the whole place just for my family and friends (and myself of course). A beautiful 75 degree day with blue skies and incredible puffy white clouds. It would be a picture perfect day having a blast in the Magic Kingdom together with lots of photo ops. Variations on that perfect day include a cruise, Hawaii, Bermuda, Paris, London - or a fall day at the park.

10) If you weren't a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
My first career is nursing - specifically Labor and Delivery. I guess you could say I'm drawn to babies. I love helping to bring them into this world and watch a couple grow into a family. As you work with the parents, they let you into some of their most precious moments and you become part of their family for a little while. It is definitely the happiest place in the hospital! Other than nursing, I'd love to swap places with Samantha Brown from the Travel channel and tour some of the best hotels in the world. I think I'd rather enjoy getting paid to be a tourist.

1) Why do you love this image?
I love that this image tells me about a little girl..... who loves her big sister.... and a big sister who adores her little sister. I caught them doing "airplane"..... saw the light behind them.. and knew it was a perfect moment.... I just had to get my camera.

3) What do you love about Photography?
I love that it remembers everything..... When my children are grown and I have forgotten the little pieces of their childhood... those moments are forever captured.

4) What type of Photography do you specialize in and why?
Children! I love that each one is different. I love the little things that make them each unique..... whether they are shy.... if they suck their thumb... if their hair is full of curls.... or thin and whispy. I love the challenge of getting them to let me into their little world......and then telling their story... the way I see them.

About your life?

5) What are your favorite hobbies and pastimes?
Well... besides photography? I have taken a liking to knitting. I love pretty much anything crafty.

6) Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by the everyday little moments.... My children are the reason I decided to start this journey. My desire to capture their childhood in a magical way.

7) Who are some of your favorite singers/bands?
Well- I only listen to Christian music. A few of my favs are... JJ Heller, Addison Road, Casting Crowns, Need to breathe and Mercy Me.

8) What is your favorite movie of all time?
I would have said Dirty Dancing... until I watched the Notebook. LOVE that movie.

9) What would your ideal day be like?
My ideal day would include perfect weather... a field...or the beach.....beautiful light... my children playing (without fighting .. hehe) and me with my camera to capture it.

10) If you weren't a photographer, what other profession would you like to pursue?
Oh man! This is a toughie... I honestly do not know. I always said this is what I wanted to do.... but when I was little little... I always wanted to be a Psychiatrist for Drug & Alcoholic abusers. I think I like my job much more though.

What a dream Carter was! So cute, so curious, so precious. I love two year olds and spending time with Carter reminded me of my sweet babies when they were two.

I hope this session will always remind Carter's mom and dad how precious he was when he was two.

This is round two for Taylor. She wanted a variety of locations so this is her farm session. The chicken photo is her dream shot...yes, she's a farm girl at heart. The owners of this farm, Florence and Howard, are the sweetest couple I've ever met, so generous and friendly. They always want to meet my clients and do so much to make us feel welcome. When Florence heard that Taylor had her heart set on getting her picture taken with chickens, she rushed right over to the barn and started throwing chicken feed all around.

I'm not sure this is what Taylor will want to use as her yearbook photo, but it was definitely her dream senior session.

What to wear? That is the question I'm always asked and of course it is! The truth is, you have to absolutely adore what you're wearing if you want to absolutely adore the end result. Choosing what to wear is part of the fun of the custom portrait experience. Your wardrobe is such a personal choice and can be dramatic and elegant or fun and whimsical.

I love the look of a family in white. There, I said it. I know many photographers who try to lead their clients away from white, but I think there is something so classic and timeless about it.

That said, nothing gets me more excited than to have a photo session with perfectly color coordinated clients. Putting it together can be a very daunting task, though! And the last thing I want is for you to get all stressed out over your photo session with me!

This is a great example of choosing blue as the main palette. Easy peasy!

When clients ask me what they should wear, I always say "Color coordinate, but don't get all matchy-matchy." What does that mean? Look at this simple look I've put together here. I started with a little girl's dress that I absolutely adore. Then, I pulled the colors from that dress into the rest of the family's outfits. This really simplifies color coordinating. I tried to stay away from too many patterns, but as you can see, I didn't avoid patterns completely.

Having a theme in mind for your session can help as well...classic, funky, vintage or elegant, whatever...just remember to relax and enjoy getting ready for your custom portrait session. The sky is the limit! Tutus and vintage lace for your baby? Fantastic! Cowboy boots and daddy's tie for your little boy? How fun! A prom dress in the middle of a farmer's field? I like it!

Hopefully, deciding what to wear will be something to look forward to now!

Ahhh...the boys are back to school and I finally have some uninterrupted time on my hands. These are the last of the photos I wanted to share from my trip to South Africa. This was my favorite place. The Indian Ocean. We went here almost daily and the boys LOVED body surfing. There aren't any shark nets along this part of the beach, so it was a bit freaky...we made sure they didn't go too far out though.

It's hard to believe the day is finally here. We're leaving for Durban tomorrow a.m. I'm so excited, especially excited and happy that Mel gets to spend time with his family. He just loves them so much. And also so happy for our boys to get to know their Dido, Baka, aunts, uncles and cousins.

I've got all my favorite things with me Mel (heh, heh)...camera, new lens (yay), Nook (yay, yay) and I'm ready to chill for the next three weeks, reading, soaking in the sun, body surfing, photographing and of course, drinking South African wine and eating South African chocolate. Heaven. On. Earth.

This post would not be complete without a couple photos. Here is my oldest son, Billy, or Will I. Am. as I like to call him, with his beautiful girlfriend. I'll be gone for his birthday (bad, bad mother)...so we celebrated early.

There is just nothing like a little one year old boy! Aaden is THE most stinking cutest little one year old ever. Did that even make sense!!?? Look at this angel. He was fascinated by my camera which made my job so easy.

I'm definitely missing my Ashley Rae (my assistant/daughter who moved to Indianapolis for those of you who are new here), but Aaden made it easy on me. He stared straight into this crazy lady's camera and posed like a super-model.

Kelsey is so beautiful. I could feel her energy the entire session. Seniors are like that! I really hope I was able to capture her beauty and spirit and hope her family loves these as much as I do.

And, of course I had to throw this one of the HUGE steer in, right Kelsey! The things we did to get a shot! This steer was behind an electric fence (thanks Mr. V for showing me how to get through it) and came a bit too close for comfort. I know he was just being friendly but still....kinda freaked me out. Looking at this photo...that bull does not look as big as I remember!!

This was a super fun session. I'm not much of a country girl, but this farm is really beautiful. There were chickens and kitties roaming everywhere. Not to mention a HUUUGE steer (that's a big, big cow for all you city people)...I'm still trying to get my courage up to go near him, but not this session. He is smack dab in the middle of a beautiful meadow. So, I will one day make friends with him for sure.

Only one more week before my daughter Ashley and her family moves far, far away from me. There will be no more impromptu photo shoots with my sweet Aubree Elizabeth or Colin Laurence. No more surprise knocks on my door in the morning to see Colin holding a bag of donuts for the boys.

I know it's a small world nowadays, and we'll talk every day and it won't seem like they're five hours away, but, I'm still sad. (Sorry Ashley...I'll say it out loud just this once!)

I had the pleasure of photographing sweet Ava Elizabeth for her six month photos. I've known Ava since shooting her mommy's maternity session, then Ava as a newborn and now in all her six month old glory!

How big is Ava? SOOO BIG! She loved playing this game and was so proud!! How stinking cute is she!!

Mason's 6 Month Session {Freeland Michigan Baby Photographer}

How can you not love a six month old? To be honest, I think six month sessions are something I'm going to seek out! I love newborns, but gosh! I adore babies! Look at Mason! He is so stinking cute, I couldn't stop taking pictures. Sometimes, I think I should tell the moms to leave their babies with me for the day and let me be their baby sitter slash photographer. It would be a win-win situation!

Aren't you just dying at how cute this one is!!!

I couldn't resist asking Maggie May to pose for me. Love her. I seriously love her. I know that sounds crazy...(I even said "I love you" to her as she was leaving), but this little sweetheart has me wrapped around her finger.

I admit to being hyper-emotional lately...probably due to the fact that my daughter is moving away from me soon and taking my sweet grandbabies with her. : ( I try not to think about it, but it creeps into every minute of my day.

I find myself getting teary-eyed more than usual lately...watching Colin play soccer, which is usually just a normal everyday thing, had me fighting back tears the entire game...picking my boys up from school seems like a scene from a Lifetime Movie! Don't even get me going about my mother's 85th birthday and seeing my grandbabies with her!

Being a mother is not for the faint of heart! (That's one of my favorite quotes by the way).

So yes, Miss Maggie May just melted my heart. Melted it.

Mason was not exactly happy having his sister so close, but I was quick enough to catch this before he screamed!

Alright! That's my emotion-filled post for the day! Did I mention watching my kids get on the bus every morning leaves me sobbing !! LOL!

Sweet baby Madelyn holds the trophy so far for being my best newborn poser to date. She has really set the bar high! Love her wrinkled back in this one.
And...are you kidding!! Look at this model. Ashley (my beautiful assistant, aka the Baby Whisperer) said, "She poses herself!"...and yes...she totally posed herself in this one! She looked right at me and held nice and still for me to get this. LOL!

This little sweetie pie is so cute it HURTS! She couldn't take a bad picture. I fell in love with little Addyson and couldn't get enough of her. She just reminded me so much of my babies and how they'd hold their little hands tightly underneath their chins like this. Such a little model and now her mama and daddy will forever remember how beautiful she was at three months!

Ok...I just couldn't resist...I had to show this one too. You can see Addyson's mom's hand right there, so Addyson was in no danger here Poor baby!! I think it was a mixture of the toile and just not being in the mood to be in a box!

It was Aubree's turn for an outdoor photo session. I've had my eye on a new location,today was sunny and 60, so I picked her up and we headed out. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted. Aubree is not the most cooperative model. She doesn't like to look at the camera...I asked her why and she said, "I just don't, Gramma." I did catch her a couple times.

I'm definitely going to do this more often. I picked Colin up for a quick photo session. (Aubree was a bit jealous, so if all goes according to my plan, she'll be begging me to take her on a photo shoot soon).

I took him to an old farmhouse. The snow was so bright he couldn't keep his eyes open. Colin always tries too hard to pose for me so I had a little talk with him and he tried so hard not to do his signature smile! He told me all about Bowzer and defeating level 8 and how his daddy was throwing fireballs at Bowzer...I just kept snapping away hoping to get a few good ones. He's so beautiful, my baby grandson, Colin!

Alivia was just the sweetest four week old little girl ever. I couldn't get over her sweet little bald head. She didn't want to sleep and broke free from this swaddle in seconds!

She wanted to pose for us instead of sleep.

Finally, she gave in and fell asleep, so we could have some fun with her. Her skin was gorgeous...like a little porcelain doll.

And big sister Kaitlyn wanted to play, too.

I just love mommy and baby captures and this is one of my all time favorites. So sweet.

Christmas is over

I finally was able to find time to take a picture of our tree. Christmas morning before everybody got up.

For two years now, Brandon and I are the first ones up on Christmas morning. Santa was very good to us this year.

And this is my traditional Christmas morning snapshot of my babies holding the first present they're going to open..right before the chaos begins!

Time for the tree to come down and to start looking forward to Black Friday 2010. My favorite holiday of the year!

So precious. I love family photos like this. I was so excited when I saw Adam's tattoos! I've been waiting for a new daddy with tattoos, LOL!

It was freezing outside but it was worth it to get to know such a cute, loving couple! I enjoyed myself in spite of the weather. Cosmo seemed to enjoy himself, too!

We're trying to keep this session a secret because this is Jashana's Christmas gift for her boyfriend. I've only had time to edit one and I love it!
What a seriously beautiful woman! This session was a blast for me. We all had so much fun!

What a loving family this was! Branson gave me so many hugs! I don't think it had anything to do with all the marshmallows I shared with him : )

And Avery was such a little angel. I really enjoyed him. He has the most beautiful eyes, doesn't he?. He took such good care of his little brother, too.

Branson was such a good model. He'd stop and say, "Cheese!"

This family really stole my heart. Look at Avery and his mom! And I love how Branson is oblivious to it all...just sitting up there posing for Miss Liz!
